Swainsboro, GA: Rountree arrested in Thanksgiving death

On Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 at approximately 10:56 p.m., officers of the Swainsboro Police Department were dispatched to 220 Watson Street in Swainsboro in reference to a domestic dispute.
Upon arriving on the scene, the first responding officers knocked on the door of the residence and identified themselves as police officers. No person came ot the door of the residence to inform the officers of anything. Swainsboro Police immediately asked for additional assistance and surrounded the home. Other officers arrived on the scene and, after a brief period of time, convinced the male offender located inside the residence, identified as Freeman James Rountree, Jr., age 41, of the Watson Street address, to access entry of the home. At that time, officers found Maegan Salter Rountree, 26, of 314 Elaine Drive in Swainsboro, lying on the floor, unconscious. Rountree was arrested on the scene and transported to Emanuel County Jail. Emanuel EMS was on the scene to render assistance to Mrs. Rountree.
Mrs. Rountree was announced dead at Emanuel Medical Center a short time later, after her arrival to the hospital. The cause of death appeared to be the direct result of a stab wound located on the victim’s body. Further investigation revealed that the offender and victim were husband and wife. The incident followed an ongoing domestic problem within the home.
The case remains under investigation by the Swainsboro Police Department.
