Tanisha M. Davis, 26, was charged Sunday with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Montreall M. Wright, 35, of Rochester, said Rochester Police Sgt. Justin Collins. Wright’s death marks the city’s 36th homicide of the year.
Wright was stabbed in the neck inside the couple’s Sawyer Street home about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to court documents. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.
“We’re still trying to piece together what happened,” Assistant District Attorney Bill Gargan said after the arraignment.
Davis, a stay-at-home mom, had dated Montreall Wright off and on for about seven years, according to her family. The couple recently moved in to the Sawyer Street residence and had a rocky relationship.
Wright, a married father of six, worked for a local moving company, according to his family.
Friends of the couple said they were sad to see both families suffer.
“She’s a good person; He was too, but he had an ugly streak,” said Davis’ friend Marion Ruffin. “She reached out to people for help. I’m sorry to see this happen. I’m sad to see him go.”
Mary Davis said her daughter was not a violent person and must have defended herself Sunday morning. She said there was a history of verbal and physical abuse between the pair.
Tanisha Davis Tuesday was returned to the Monroe County Jail without bail. She is scheduled to return to City Court for a preliminary hearing Friday morning.
