Hilton Head, SC: Woman charged with boyfriend's hit-and-run death on Hilton Head

The girlfriend of a man killed Wednesday in a hit-and-run crash on Hilton Head Island has been accused of running over him after a drunken argument and then driving off, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.
Kelli Ann McKinney, 43, of Hilton Head was charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
McKinney was driving a 1998 Mercury Mystique that struck and killed 55-year-old Jose Guadalupe Tinoco, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were called to the area of Dianah's Drive and Marshland Road just after 11:15 p.m. and found Tinoco lying in the road with multiple injuries, according to a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators identified McKinney as Tinoco's girlfriend and found that her car had damage consistent with evidence discovered at the scene, according to Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh.
"According to McKinney, she and Tinoco had been hanging out and drinking together at a home on Dianah's Drive just prior to the accident," McIntosh said in a news release. "The two left together, with Tinoco initially driving the vehicle; however, they became involved in an argument shortly after getting in the car. Tinoco got out and advised he was going to walk, at which time McKinney took control of the vehicle. It was at this time that Tinoco was run over by McKinney's car. McKinney advised that she was unaware that she had hit Tinoco and left the scene."
McKinney could face additional charges if investigators conclude she intentionally ran over Tinoco, McIntosh said.
McKinney was being held Friday evening at the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bail set at $100,000.
McKinney was charged in 2009 with leaving the scene of an accident, but the charges were later dropped, according to online Beaufort County court records.
She also has been charged multiple times with public disorderly conduct, as well as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, fleeing to evade arrest, speeding and driving without a license, according to jail records.
