Clifford Wright was convicted last month of beating to death his former girlfriend, Tammy Gardner, and her new boyfriend, Gabriel Gabrielli, as they slept at Gardner's home in 2006.
Deputy Attorney General Steven Wood asked jurors on Monday to "let the punishment fit these crimes" and vote to put Wright to death.
Wright's attorney, Jerome Capone, asked the jury to consider his client's difficult childhood with an abusive father and an alcoholic mother.
The jury vote does not have to be unanimous and the final decision about the death penalty will be up to Superior Court Judge Mary Johnston.
