Victim suffered 10 stab wounds
County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Isiah Patterson (DOB 11/9/45) has been
sentenced to death for the March 2006 murder of Consquelo Barker.
According to the Mesa Police probable cause statement and facts revealed at trial, Mesa Police were
called to Patterson’s home after getting reports that a man and woman were fighting. Before police
arrived, Patterson called 911 and then hung up. The 911 operator called back and Patterson said in part,
“You had better get here quick. I just did something bad with a butcher knife.” When police arrived they
found Barker dead. Witnesses had seen a woman screaming and running while Patterson was chasing her.
The couple’s three-year-old son was in the apartment at the time of the stabbing.
Patterson was arrested at the scene.
On March 24, 2006 a grand jury indicted him on a single count of First Degree Murder. On November 5,
2009 a jury found Patterson guilty as charged. On December 4 that same jury sentenced Patterson to
death. Deputy County Attorneys Kristin Larish and Heather Wicht prosecuted the case.
Thomas stated, “The brutality of this crime warranted the death penalty. We appreciate the jury’s verdicts,
and the hard work of Mesa Police investigators and our prosecutors.”
