A man who allegedly took his former girlfriend hostage and drove her from Salem to The Dalles killed himself after he was cornered by a Marion County sheriff’s deputy, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Mickey Jarrell, 50, of Salem shot himself in the head Monday afternoon as the deputy ordered him to drop his revolver. Jarrell did not point the gun at the deputy and the deputy never fired his weapon, said Lt. Sheila Lorance, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

The shooting came after Jarrell’s ex-girlfriend persuaded him to let her go and called police.

Brittany Caudle, 22, told the sheriff's office she had broken up with Jarrell several days earlier and wanted to pick up some of her property at the house they once shared. When she arrived about 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jarrell allegedly attacked her and bound her face, hands and feet.

Later, he reportedly put her in the trunk of his car. Then he moved her to the front, where he tied her to the seat and headed toward The Dalles.

Eventually, Caudle convinced Jarrell that they could get back together and he drove back to Salem. He dropped her off at a strip mall to get her car and told her to follow him home.

Caudle followed him for a short time before returning to the mall to call police. She later was treated at Salem Hospital.

Jarrell continued to his house, where he was confronted by the deputy.

While he was driving to The Dalles, Jarrell reportedly admitted to several robberies at the Woodburn outlet mall. He also claimed an interest in making bombs.

Detectives are investigating the robberies and the kidnapping. Anyone with information on either case is asked to call 503-540-8007.
