When they arrived at the couple's home Stubbs barricaded himself inside for nearly 8 hours. Deputies say when they entered the home just before midnight on Sunday they found Stubbs shot in the closet. Authorities say he had been on life support at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
From 11/30:
A Crawfordville man is believed to have shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. Now Wakulla County Deputies are trying to find out what led to this weekend tragedy.
The home at 61 Ponderosa Drive in Crawfordville is now quiet, a much different scene from Sunday night, when 29-year-old Steven Stubbs barricaded himself in the house for nearly 8 hours.
Wakulla County Sheriff's deputies say they believe Stubbs shot and killed his girlfriend, 28-year-old Leslie Drew then dumped her body in the Apalachicola National Forest. Authorities found Drew's body Sunday afternoon, when they showed up at the couple's home Stubbs was armed and would not come out. Authorities finally made it inside just before midnight and found him shot in the closet, but was conscious.
"They were well liked and loved by many. We don't know what brought it to this level. We're still investigating all of the details of what exactly happened. We just know the effects are far reaching," said Detective Bruce Ashley with the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office.
David Rossetti, who lives several doors down from the couple rented them the house just months ago. "They were actually starting to meet a few people in the neighborhood. I know they went to a party that night, the night before with some people in the area. They seemed very nice and happy. You don't know people until things happen you know," said Rossetti.
Drew was a Paraprofessional at Riversink Elementary School and was working to become a teacher. "She was very popular, she's very outgoing, very friendly. We talked about different ways that they could remember her in a positive way. So the main thing that the school is concerned with is getting the kids through this day," said David Miller, the Superintendent for Wakulla County Schools.
School officials called in 6 counselors from surrounding schools to offer children and staff support during this trying time.
At last word deputies say Stubbs is on life support at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Deputies believe Drew was shot between late Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
Stubbs has a 6 month old and a three year-old child. Drew was the mother of a two-year-old little girl.
Deputies are currently investigating past domestic violence issues. They say there have been some instances of battery involving Stubbs and his estranged wife, but they're not saying what past problems Stubbs and Drew may have had.
