A Lubbock County man shot and killed himself in South Lubbock while Sheriff’s deputies were trying to serve an arrest warrant Wednesday morning.
Mark Stowe, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies surrounded Stow’s pickup just before 10:15 a.m. in the 9800 block of Indiana Avenue. They were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon stemming from an incident last week where Stowe reportedly threatened his wife with a shotgun, according to his warrant.
Chief Deputy Cody Scott said Stowe was already dead in his pickup by the time deputies made it there. He shot himself in the head.
Scott said deputies surrounded the vehicle to serve the warrant rather than try to initiate a traffic stop to reduce the risk to the public and officers by preventing a possible pursuit through traffic.
Deputies treated Stowe as armed and dangerous because of the recent incident and because they knew he had access to a gun, Scott said.
The incident, which blocked off southbound lanes near 98th Street for hours, drew dozens of onlookers who speculated about what happened.
