Columbia, MO: Dog killed during dispute

Columbia police shot and killed an aggressive dog this morning while responding to a domestic assault call.

Officers shot one of two dogs that approached them at 603 Glenstone Drive in east Columbia because it was acting aggressive, said Officer Jessie Haden, a Columbia Police Department spokeswoman.

Officers were responding to a report of an altercation, possibly with a gun, between Julian M. Cave, 19, and his 19-year-old girlfriend.

Haden said the victim was afraid of Cave after a fight they had while leaving a local nightclub, and she locked herself in the bathroom upon returning to the residence.

Cave was charged with third-degree domestic assault and obstruction for trying to kick the bathroom door down and his effort to keep officers away from the bathroom. Haden said he gave in after a dose of pepper spray to the eyes.

Four witnesses were able to provide officers with information about the altercation. The victim was not injured, Haden said, and no gun was found at the residence.
