BOYCE -- The elderly Colfax-area man who police say shot and killed his ex-wife called family and police minutes after shooting the 81-year-old woman.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office still is investigating the fatal shooting of Doris Hargis, who was living in the Boyce area. She died early Tuesday morning, allegedly after being shot by Richard Hargis, 83, according to the Sheriff's Office. Richard Hargis was arrested by Grant Parish Sheriff's deputies around 7:30 a.m. at his Colfax-area home shortly after the shooting, Grant Parish Sheriff's officials said. Hargis went with deputies without incident.

Rapides Parish Sheriff's Assistant Chief Deputy Herman Walters said the investigation into the homicide is ongoing. The initial investigation, though, has revealed that Doris Hargis was staying at property the family owns in the Boyce area in the 4900 block of Hot Wells Road, while Richard Hargis was staying at the family's Colfax-area home.

Sometime between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Richard Hargis shot Doris Hargis at the Hot Wells Road home and then left the scene, according to Walters.

Court records indicate that the two filed for divorce June 2, 2008, and the divorce was finalized by a judge's signature May 26. But the terms of the divorce hadn't been settled, evidenced by the fact the community property settlement hadn't been filed yet, according to court documents.

Police officials said the motive appears to be related to property and asset disputes in connection with the divorce.

Walters said Hargis called a family member and then the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office saying, "I just killed my wife." The Sheriff's Office got the call at 7:11 a.m.

Hargis was held in the Grant Parish Jail until Rapides Parish Sheriff's investigators arrived to interview him. He was transported back to the Rapides Parish Jail Tuesday afternoon, where he was booked with second-degree murder.

Tuesday morning more than 10 personal vehicles were parked in front of the Hot Wells Road home as family gathered there.

Richard Hargis was a retired farmer, Rapides Sheriff's Officials said.
