COCONUT CREEK

A man forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's home overnight and stabbed her friend to death, police said.

Investigators have charged Paul Gayle, 29, with first-degree murder in the death of Hasting Clarke.

Gayle's ex-girlfriend, Joy Stewart, was not injured, police said.

The incident happened just before 1 a.m. in the 4100 block of Northwest 43rd Way.

Someone called 911 from Stewart's home and hung-up, prompting police to drive by the address to make sure everything was OK, officials said. When officers reached the home, though, they found Stewart driving away, stopped her and learned that Stewart had been driving away in an attempt to seek help, officials said. Police found Clarke, who they said had met Stewart only recently, dead inside the home.

Gayle is being held without bond at the Broward County Jail. In addition to first-degree murder, he also has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and armed burglary.
