New York City, NY: NYC man accused of killing girlfriend's dog

August 20, 2009 by The Associated Press /

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City man has been charged with beating his girlfriend's dog to death.

Lawyer Joseph Sorrentino said Thursday his client Frank Coppola of Staten Island was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Coppola faces a maximum four years in prison if convicted. He's free on $2,500 bail. His next court appearance is Sept. 23.

Sorrentino says Coppola "vehemently" denies the allegation.

Authorities say Coppola beat the Chihuahua after the dog bit him in the apartment he shares with his girlfriend. They say his girlfriend was away at the time.

In December, actor and former minor league baseball player Joseph Petcka pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend's cat in a drunken, jealous rage. He faced a sentence of community service.
