La Costa, CA: La Costa man surrenders in death of girlfriend

Neighbors say the mother of two who was slashed to death in her Carlsbad home had just reconciled with her boyfriend, who has surrendered and is now jailed, it was reported today.

The North County Times today identified the victim as Jennifer Stark, 43, who had worked as a court reporter in Vista. The San Diego County medical examiner had not released an official identity, however.

Stark’s neighbors said the victim had two teenaged children.

“She was very loving,” said Rosemary Leone, who described herself as a friend for 11 years. Leone told the newspaper she had to call Stark’s daughter and ex- husband, vacationing in Hawaii, to tell them to head home early because the tragedy.

Stark was allegedly knifed to death by her sometime-on, sometime-off boyfriend, Jonathan S. French, 40, of nearby La Costa. The chain of events began Friday night when a neighbor peeked into an open garage in the 6400 block of Camino del Parque and saw a body.

French was immediately identified as a suspect. The woman’s car was found outside a Carlsbad restaurant, and French’s blood-stained Chrysler was found abandoned along a road in southern Encinitas, with a tire torn off, deputies said.

French walked into the Encinitas sheriff’s station about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, surrendered, and was booked on suspicion of murder. Coroners said an autopsy is pending, and the woman’s name would be officially released today.
