MARYSVILLE - Shock and disbelief at Beale Air Force Base, as word spread that one of their own allegedly killed his girlfriend, shot his friend, then ended up shot and killed by police.
Santa Clara police got into a shootout with suspect 21-year-old Ian York, shortly before noon Sunday. York died in the shooting.
York had moved from Indiana to Marysville, where he's been stationed at Beale Air Force Base, for the past year-and-a-half.
He worked as a security policeman, guarding aircraft and patrolling the base.
Those who knew York, including his commander, said the incident is nothing they could have seen coming.
"Of course, it does surprise me. Airmen in today's Air Force, you never expect something like this. So, anytime an incident of this nature occurs, it catches all of us by surprise," said Air Force Major Chad Gallagher, York's commander.
It all started late Saturday night, after Marysville police got a 911 call, about a shooting at the apartment where York and his 19-year-old girlfriend, Kelly Roome lived.
Police said the pair had been arguing, but it's unclear what they fought about. Published reports said Roome had hugged another man earlier that night.
Asked if the shooting was motivated by a lover's triangle, Marysville police Sgt. John Osbourn said it wasn't.
"Not between the two injured and the suspect," Osbourn said.
Investigators still have many pieces to put together in their investigation. But Sgt. Osbourn said York and the man he shot in the leg, were friends.
Early Sunday morning, authorities in Placer County had found York's car abandoned with the keys. It's unclear how he later made it to Santa Clara.
