Charges against father of Ore. teen who killed

Associated Press - July 21, 2009 10:25 AM ET

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) - A December trial date has been set for a Coos County man accused of criminal mistreatment in the care of his son.

The charges arose after Fred Cozad's girlfriend was beaten to death by Cozad's son in February.

A judge committed the teenager, Henry Cozad, to the custody of the state Department of Human Services.

During a hearing on the matter, District Attorney Paul Frasier had several witnesses testify that throughout Henry Cozad's life, he came to school dirty and smelling of urine, feces and cigarette smoke.

Frasier described Henry's mattress as rotted from urine and said there was no sink in the home's bathroom.

Coos County Judge Richard Barron scheduled a 4-day trial to start Dec. 8.
