MESA – A Mesa teen was shot and killed in her own front yard and police say her ex-boyfriend is responsible.

According to investigators, the ex-boyfriend showed up at Ashley Dewitte's home near Gilbert and Brown roads Wednesday afternoon. He asked her to step outside. That's when neighbors reported hearing several gunshots.

"I counted them," one neighbor told 3TV. "There were five, and then I heard screaming."

Ashley's father was home at the time. He ran outside to find his daughter had been shot to death. The ex-boyfriend, Eric Serdechny, 20, was also dead, having turned his gun on himself.

Police believe the couple, who dated for less than six months, had recently broken up. There reportedly was no history of violence.

Investigators said the shooting happened very quickly and there was no argument before the bullets flew.

Dewitte, 18, graduated from Mountain View High School just a few weeks ago.
